Yesterday I saw the first trailer for James Cameron’s next film “Avatar,” which you can see in glorious HD over at Apple’s movie trailer website.
When I first started hearing about Avatar a year ago, it was pretty easy to get excited. James Cameron is responsible for some of my favorite childhood movies, and has proven himself to be a director with a great understanding of both the technical aspects and dramatic aspects of film making. I had read an interview with him where he talked about how he wanted to take the 3D effect and work with it in terms of the dramatic elements of a film. Where the effect would increase and decrease based on moments and feelings in the story. It was enough to get me excited and even get me interested in this 3D film stuff, which I’m still not completely sold on.
Unfortunately after seeing the trailer I’m not nearly as interested as I previously was. The film, which in one interview I read promised “photo-realistic” CGI, looks more like a video game than it does a film. Maybe I was expecting too much another T2 perhaps, but what I saw left me completely underwhelmed.
