The Wire 101

The Wire

Word on the streets has it that Harvard University will offer a course that studies the HBO series “The Wire.”

Without a doubt “The Wire” is my favorite of the HBO drama series. Unlike some of the others series that dragged on, The Wire seemed to have the entire arc mapped out from day one. Where other series ran out of ideas **cough Sopranos cough** and starting introducing new characters that didn’t feel a part of the universe, The Wire managed to glide through 5 seasons where principal characters were removed and new ones introduced without skipping a beat.

On the surface the show can be summarized as a criminal drama series but it really goes so much deeper than that. Ultimately the show is about institutionalism and how various facets of the American city are being destroyed by it. The show examines various areas of the city of Baltimore from the drug dealers on the corners, to port workers, to politicians, to school teachers, and finally to the press. The series examines all of these areas with loving detail and an amazing amount of honesty.

Needless to say I really like this series, time and time again I’ve recommended the show to friends and co-workers. If I was a Harvard student I would enroll in their course in a heartbeat, and I beat I could cruise through it and the get straights A’s.

Geocities is no more … RIP

October 27th, 2009

Yahoo finally killed off Geocities. I have to admit I feel a little bit of nostalgia when I think back on Geocities. I remember quite well when the service was launched, I definitely made a couple bad Geocities websites back in the day. It was with out a doubt part of my introduction to web design and it definitely affected the things I learned and the paths I travelled there after.

NetNuts has a nice article with 10 reasons why closing Geocities is long overdue. If you are like me it will take you on trip down memory lane.

How dope was GZA on Wu-Tang Forever?

GZA Logo

I made a genius playlist based on Wu-Tang Clan in iTunes. A couple of joints from Wu-Tang Forever turned up, and it got me thinking. It’s amazing how dope some of the GZA’s verses are on that album. 12 years after the fact and they shit all over a lot of the recent stuff.

Friday’s Forgotten Hip-Hop Jam

October 16th, 2009

Been taking shelter from the nasty grey weather this morning behind Photoshop CS4 and in the company of The Goats. Their 1992 album “Tricks Of The Shade” is ridiculously good, and like all good music doesn’t sound dated even 17 years later. It’s a shame how this group disappeared and was forgotten.

Here is a video for “Do The Dig Dug” from their album “Tricks Of The Shade.” The album is definitely worth downloading, I tell you to buy it but it was already impossible to find in the late 90’s.

Garbage Island

October 15th, 2009

I saw on the net that yesterday there was global inciative to get people with blogs to write about climate change and global warming. I thought it was a pretty good idea, but unfortunatelly I’m a bit late to the party.

Garbage Island is situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it’s about twice the size of the state of Texas and is an area where ocean currents naturally draw all the garabage and waste we throw in them.

The area is filled with plastics which little by little break down into smaller bits of plastic. Eventually these really small bits of plastic are eaten by fishes, which get eaten by bigger fishes, and which in the end get eaten by us.

Check out the clip from CNN, which is where I first heard the story about a year ago:
