Avatar & the future of cinema

December 30th, 2009

I saw Avatar almost two weeks ago, I wanted to immediately write something about it on this blog but my Christmas vacation got in the way. I left for Italy the day after seeing the film and didn’t have the time to do any blogging. Needless to say this post is little bit delayed.

Up next, reading Animal Farm

George Orwell's Animal Farm

I just finished reading David Simon’s Homicide, which I mentioned in a previous post, and am moving right along to George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

I originally read Animal Farm way back in 1994 as a part of a civics course in school and got the urge to read it again when I saw the fantastic cover art at a local bookstore. Looking back on it I wondering if I wasn’t a bit too young to really appreciate Orwell’s satire on power and corruption when I read it the first time. Needless to say I’m looking forward to diving into this book, with the holidays and awful winter weather (snowing all day long) I should cruise through it in a day or two.

I simply love the cover art on this book. I bought it along with 1984 pretty much because the artwork appealed to me so much.

The Google phone is coming

December 13th, 2009

Pretty interesting turn of events, it seems that the rumored Google phone is true and coming in January. According to what I’ve read it will be a GSM phone that will be sold unlocked and without a carrier, in terms of form and features and appearances it’s very much inline with the iPhone.

I found this to be pretty surprising, I saw the battle between Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android playing out much the way the battle between Apple and Microsoft played out in the 80’s. With Google thriving by licensing out it’s software to all hardware manufactures and Apple ultimately being held back by it’s business model of building both hardware and software. Does Google want to have it’s cake and eat it too?

Trying Spotify

Spotify Lofo

So I decided to finally try out Spotify, for those of you in the dark Spotify is a European streaming music service. You can search a huge catalog of music and listen to songs, create playlists, and even purchase music. The software is top notch, music begins to play immediately, and you can scroll forward or backwards in a song the way you would a song on your computer.

Spotify is available in two models. There is a free version, which you can gain access to by getting an invitation from a friend. This free version is supported by ads in the software that play in between songs. Then there is a Premium version which is ad free, has a higher bit-rate, and extra features like an offline mode which allows you to save playlists and play them without an internet connection. This Premium version is also available on cellular phones like the iPhone and Android phones.

I had first heard of Spotify a couple of years ago, and in the last year it’s become incredibly popular in Sweden. So when my friend Erik offered me an invitation to join I decided to finally give it a try.

The good things in life

December 9th, 2009

Tonight I went and had dinner with Chris, an old friend I haven’t seen in ages. When the waitress brought me my coffee I could smell it the second it left the kitchen and on it’s entire approach to the table.

Now that is one good espresso! Having said that, looking at this picture I can say the iPhone’s camera deteriorates like crazy with age.
