The Road (Redux)

February 10th, 2010

I enjoyed the film version of The Road so much that I absolutely had to read the book by Cormac McCarthy. So I went out and bought it on Sunday and devoured it. It really is a book that you can’t put down, I finished reading it late last night.

I highly recommend it to anyone that hasn’t read it. Buy it on Amazon through this link and you help support this blog.

Brave New World Revisited

January 2nd, 2010

In school we were given the choice to read either Aledous Huxley’s “Brave New World” or George Orwell’s “1984″, I went with “Brave New World” and it’s a book that stayed with me over the years. I just finished reading it again, along with “Brave New World Revisted,” and I really enjoyed reading the both of them. I find the parallels between Huxley’s futuristic society and our own to be frighteningly interesting, from the mindless non-stop entertainment, to the sanctioned and approved drugs, to the idea of a world driven by mass-production.

Up next, reading Animal Farm

George Orwell's Animal Farm

I just finished reading David Simon’s Homicide, which I mentioned in a previous post, and am moving right along to George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

I originally read Animal Farm way back in 1994 as a part of a civics course in school and got the urge to read it again when I saw the fantastic cover art at a local bookstore. Looking back on it I wondering if I wasn’t a bit too young to really appreciate Orwell’s satire on power and corruption when I read it the first time. Needless to say I’m looking forward to diving into this book, with the holidays and awful winter weather (snowing all day long) I should cruise through it in a day or two.

I simply love the cover art on this book. I bought it along with 1984 pretty much because the artwork appealed to me so much.

Reading David Simon’s Homicide

November 6th, 2009

Saw this book on my way home yesterday afternoon. David Simon is one of the writers behind the HBO series “The Wire,” being a huge fan of the show I couldn’t resist and immediately bought the book.

The book, which like the TV show is set in the city of Baltimore, was originally published in 1991 and even won some awards back then. However with the popularity of HBO’s “The Wire,” it was re-released two years ago.

Just started reading it, I’ll be sure to do a follow up post and drop my thoughts on the novel.

Art in the favellas

May 7th, 2009

I found these pictures over at ekosystem.org and was blown away, how does one prepare and organize something that big and spread about? Seems like such a daunting task. I’d love to know how long it took or how much paint.
