Rapper Guru in a coma

March 1st, 2010

I just heard that Guru, one half of the classic hip-hop group Gang Starr, was in a coma after suffering a heart attack.

Gang Starr is one of those groups that defines the genre, they are Hip-Hop music. It’s one of those groups were you struggle to pick out your favorite album, in my case either Daily Operation or Hard To Earn. Hard To Earn being the album where they had really grown as a group and reach a peaking point. Daily Operation came before it, and holds a special place in my heart because I had it on cassette and would let it play back to back in my beat up Honda.

Here’s hoping Guru recovers quickly, in the meantime I’ll leave you with one music video from each Gang Starr album.

In memory of Big L

February 16th, 2010

Yesterday market 11 years since rapper Big L passed away. He was definitely one of the best ever to hold a mic, and would have likely turned into a huge superstar had he not been murdered. Rest in peace L.

I’m going on a Big L binge this week and celebrate the man’s entire catalog!

Supreme Clientle … 10 years later

Supreme Clientele by Ghostface Killah

I can’t believe that it’s already be ten years since Ghostface Killah’s Supreme Clientle, released Jan 25th 2000. I had brush it off and give it a spin in iTunes. Listening to this album again took me back for a minute.

I lived on the other side of the Atlantic when this LP dropped.

I remember going with my friends Chris and Trey to see Ghostface play at the Garage in DC. Ghost had Raekwon and Cappadonna with him, and the show was straight bonkers. I remember them asking the crowd what albums them owned and when they got to Raekwon’s Immobiliarity the crowd was completely silent.

Oddisee

January 29th, 2010

I might have slept on the Diamond District album, but you won’t catch me sleeping twice. I found two new albums from Washington DC rapper/producer Oddisee. The first one is called “Odd Winter” and you can get it for free from his bandcamp page. Odd Winter is a part of a series, and the other parts Odd Autumn and Odd Summer can also be downloaded from his bandcamp site. However the real gem has to be “Traveling Man” which you should go and buy from iTunes.

Damn I’ve been sleeping …

January 11th, 2010

Considering how long I lived in Washington DC I ashamed that I slept on this album for so long. Diamond District’s “In The Ruff” is some real good classic 90’s boom-bap sounding hip-hop. It’s a fantastic record that any hip-hop head should go and check out. Check out Diamond District’s blog for more information on the group and make sure to check out the album.
