Amazon has launched their Android Appstore this week, you can read a little about it here.
It will be interesting to follow the progress of the Amazon Appstore. I have this notion that the majority of Android users are people that come from this generation that is used to having to spend time tweaking Windows to make it run properly, and as a result they feel entitled to downloading applications and games for free. I have no doubt that all the people spending time rooting and putting custom themes on their phones fall into this category. Then I’m sure there is a minority that are landing on Android because it’s what got pitched to them in store. These people could become the prime customers of an Amazon Appstore.
Most interesting of all is how this affects Google’s ability to generate profits from Android. I’ve always felt that Android’s greatest strength, the lack of any licensing fees, is also it’s greatest weakness. This Amazon Appstore shows that it’s entirely possible for 3rd parties to come in and ride on Google’s work for their on success.
