Can iTunes LP help the indie artist rise?

iTunes 9

I saw that Apple has released the specifications for their iTunes LP format. For those that don’t know iTunes LP is Apple’s way of encouraging customers to purchase whole albums. Including extra material like artwork, music videos, and other bonuses with the music files. Basically they are trying to replicate the music purchasing experience most of us had when we were teenagers and creating something similar to a DVD or an enhanced CD.

I think this new iTunes feature is very interesting for a whole variety of reasons, but the biggest one is how accessible these things are becoming to independent artists. The entire backend of an iTunes LP is made up from standard web technologies, which makes it very easily produced and inexpensive. A good web designer/programmer should be able to adapt and quickly put together an iTunes LP for a musician or a band. Also since it’s based on standard and open web technologies it should be easy to adapt an iTunes LP to be used in other online distribution fronts, like Amazon.com, should they begin offering a similar service.

No Flickr app for you!

September 12th, 2009

While on the topic of iTunes, Yahoo released a free iPhone app for Flickr this week. However I can’t download it because my iTunes account is linked to Sweden and the app hasn’t been made available in that particular iTunes store.

It’s infuriating because I pay for a pro-Flickr account and because it’s available in other countries like the UK and France. Last I checked one of the big motivators behind the EU was to encourage trade between countries and allow consumers to purchase goods in any EU member nation.

Why does iTunes operate in it’s own special universe where the laws or our economic union don’t apply? Sure would be nice if they just made one store for the whole EU so that things like this could be avoided.

iTunes 9 – The God, The Bad, & The Ugly

iTunes 9

Earlier this week Apple released the latest version of iTunes (9). Originally I was going to completely dog it but after a couple of days I found some things to like.

To get started I want to say that in my opinion iTunes is like a gift and a curse. On one hand it’s a cash cow that allowed a struggling company to transform itself into a powerhouse, iPods could have never taken the market without it. On the other side it’s an awfully bloated piece of software that’s grown past it’s original intent and could use a clean start. Having said that let’s get back to iTunes 9:
