Microsoft just gave the world a preview of their upcoming Windows 7 Phone Series, an operating system for smart phones, which you can see over on Gizmodo. I’m not blown away by the UI little bit too much design and too little functionality in my opinion. On the other hand they went in a direction different from everyone else, which is a pleasant surprise.

Firefox turns five today

Mozilla’s Firefox web browser was first released five years ago today. You really have to praise Mozilla and all they have done for the web and web designers.
Their commitment to open web standards has made life on the web much better and even forced some of the big boys to start cleaning up their act.
Five years ago web designers were writing a whole lot of hacks to make things work properly in Internet Explorer. Five years later and web designers are still writing hacks for Internet Explorer but less of them, and that’s thanks to the pressure that Mozilla’s Firefox has put on Internet Explorer.
Let’s hope that Firefox is still around in another five years to celebrate it’s tenth birthday.
Google preps the nails for Microsoft’s coffin
This morning news leaked of an upcoming Google operating system based on their Chrome web browser to be used on cheap netbooks. When I first started this blog I made a post about how a Google operating system could create turning point in Windows dominance, and I still believe in that. I find it interesting how things have come full circle. When Microsoft started out as a company it’s primary source of revenue was their office suites. So when they went head to head with IBM, they won the war because they were able to sell cheap licenses of Windows to every PC manufacturer. At that point it was a sound business strategy because it lead into sales of their Office products where they made the real money. In the 90’s Microsoft, in part due to their position, changed the way they did business and became heavily reliant on charging money to PC manufacturers for licensing their Windows operating system.
Turning point in Windows dominance?
Unless you’re living under a rock you know that Mircosoft’s Windows has dominated the PC industry, pretty much since computers took off. Are we finally approaching a turning point?
The advertisement on the left shows what could be first Google Android based netbooks. I love that we are reaching the point where we have mature and viable alternatives to Windows. My girlfriends Windows Vista laptop is slower than a Sunday driver.
It’s really starting to feel like the tide is turning and Microsoft will either have to step up or piss off. They are currently practically giving away Windows XP licenses to netbook makers in order to fight off Linux. XP is nearly 10 years old and Windows 7 isn’t here yet, which really opens the door for Google to get some a hold of this market.
They say Google is going to price their netbooks cheap, and get them costing about half of what Intel based netbooks retail for. Let the OS war commence.
BTW – I’ll be waiting for Apple to drop a netbook before making a purchase.
