Brave New World Revisited

January 2nd, 2010

In school we were given the choice to read either Aledous Huxley’s “Brave New World” or George Orwell’s “1984″, I went with “Brave New World” and it’s a book that stayed with me over the years. I just finished reading it again, along with “Brave New World Revisted,” and I really enjoyed reading the both of them. I find the parallels between Huxley’s futuristic society and our own to be frighteningly interesting, from the mindless non-stop entertainment, to the sanctioned and approved drugs, to the idea of a world driven by mass-production.

Moon

Moon (2009) poster

I saw the Sci-Fi film “Moon” last night. Off the bat, I have to say it’s the best Sci-Fi flick I’ve seen in a long time. Moon is an indie flick released this year from the United Kingdom. Unfortunately it’s had a pretty small and limited release, I believe that at this point it’s only been released in English speaking markets. Which means you might have to spend some time tracking the film down, however if you’re into films or into Sci-Fi film especially then I think it will be worth the effort.

Moon tells the story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), who is the lone employee on the lunar base “Sarang.” Sam’s job is overseeing the harvesting of Helium-3 which has become Earth’s cleanest and most abundant fuel source. Sam is nearing the end of a 3 year stint on the Moon, his only company on the base is a robot named GERTY (Kevin Spacey) which is there to assist him in both his job and taking care of his health. During his 3 year period on the Moon Sam has been completely isolated from his friends and family on Earth. A regular malfunction with the base’s communication satellite only allows him to send and receive pre-recorded communications. This isolation has taken it’s toll on Sam, he talks to himself on a regular basis and even begins to hallucinate.

District 9

District 9 movie poster

I went and saw District 9 last evening, I’ve always been a sucker for films that are set outside the realm of our everyday reality. So District 9, which deals with a stranded prawn like race of Aliens being segregated from society, was pretty appealing to me from the initial trailers.

The film flowed extremelly well and wasn’t completely predictable, which is my biggest problem with most mainstream action flicks. The special effects and CGI was all top notch and it was especially interesting to see how they blended real stock news footage from Africa into the film and blended it with their special effects.

The movie’s biggest downfall is that it could have done so much more but settles on being a simple action movie. The films story, it’s South African location, and most importantly the location’s history and struggles with apartheid, provided a wonderful backdrop to examine humanity’s problems in dealing with racism. The first half of the film really lays the groundwork and foundation for this, unfortunately it’s abadoned in the second act where it morphs into a mainstream action flick. It didn’t ruin the film, but I can’t help but feeling that they could have made a deeper and smarter move had they not made 180 degree turn in the middle of the flick.

That’s my two cents, by the way you can watch Alive in Joburg, the short film that District 9 was based on thanks the good people at Google.

Avatar trailer falls short

Avatar movie poster

Yesterday I saw the first trailer for James Cameron’s next film “Avatar,” which you can see in glorious HD over at Apple’s movie trailer website.

When I first started hearing about Avatar a year ago, it was pretty easy to get excited. James Cameron is responsible for some of my favorite childhood movies, and has proven himself to be a director with a great understanding of both the technical aspects and dramatic aspects of film making. I had read an interview with him where he talked about how he wanted to take the 3D effect and work with it in terms of the dramatic elements of a film. Where the effect would increase and decrease based on moments and feelings in the story. It was enough to get me excited and even get me interested in this 3D film stuff, which I’m still not completely sold on.

Unfortunately after seeing the trailer I’m not nearly as interested as I previously was. The film, which in one interview I read promised “photo-realistic” CGI, looks more like a video game than it does a film. Maybe I was expecting too much another T2 perhaps, but what I saw left me completely underwhelmed.

First time watching a Star Trek film

Star Trek (2009) movie poster

Last evening I went to see the new Star Trek film, I’ve never seen a Star Trek film before and I’ve never seen the TV show either. Something about the series never appealed to me, even as a child when science fiction was especially interesting and appealing. Star Wars dominated my childhood, and left no room for competitors. Only one “Star” series for me, thank you very much.

So I’m not really sure what tempted me to go see this movie. Maybe it’s because I hadn’t been to the cinema in what felt like ages, or maybe it was a subconscious lust for big explosions and special effects. Maybe there was some appeal in it being a remake, or reboot, of the franchise. That leading me to believe I could finally find some appeal in this Star Trek business.
