I saw the Sci-Fi film “Moon” last night. Off the bat, I have to say it’s the best Sci-Fi flick I’ve seen in a long time. Moon is an indie flick released this year from the United Kingdom. Unfortunately it’s had a pretty small and limited release, I believe that at this point it’s only been released in English speaking markets. Which means you might have to spend some time tracking the film down, however if you’re into films or into Sci-Fi film especially then I think it will be worth the effort.
Moon tells the story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), who is the lone employee on the lunar base “Sarang.” Sam’s job is overseeing the harvesting of Helium-3 which has become Earth’s cleanest and most abundant fuel source. Sam is nearing the end of a 3 year stint on the Moon, his only company on the base is a robot named GERTY (Kevin Spacey) which is there to assist him in both his job and taking care of his health. During his 3 year period on the Moon Sam has been completely isolated from his friends and family on Earth. A regular malfunction with the base’s communication satellite only allows him to send and receive pre-recorded communications. This isolation has taken it’s toll on Sam, he talks to himself on a regular basis and even begins to hallucinate.
