Reading David Simon’s Homicide

November 6th, 2009

Saw this book on my way home yesterday afternoon. David Simon is one of the writers behind the HBO series “The Wire,” being a huge fan of the show I couldn’t resist and immediately bought the book.

The book, which like the TV show is set in the city of Baltimore, was originally published in 1991 and even won some awards back then. However with the popularity of HBO’s “The Wire,” it was re-released two years ago.

Just started reading it, I’ll be sure to do a follow up post and drop my thoughts on the novel.

The Wire

Word on the streets has it that Harvard University will offer a course that studies the HBO series “The Wire.”

Without a doubt “The Wire” is my favorite of the HBO drama series. Unlike some of the others series that dragged on, The Wire seemed to have the entire arc mapped out from day one. Where other series ran out of ideas **cough Sopranos cough** and starting introducing new characters that didn’t feel a part of the universe, The Wire managed to glide through 5 seasons where principal characters were removed and new ones introduced without skipping a beat.

On the surface the show can be summarized as a criminal drama series but it really goes so much deeper than that. Ultimately the show is about institutionalism and how various facets of the American city are being destroyed by it. The show examines various areas of the city of Baltimore from the drug dealers on the corners, to port workers, to politicians, to school teachers, and finally to the press. The series examines all of these areas with loving detail and an amazing amount of honesty.

Needless to say I really like this series, time and time again I’ve recommended the show to friends and co-workers. If I was a Harvard student I would enroll in their course in a heartbeat, and I beat I could cruise through it and the get straights A’s.
